Migrate from BigCommerce to Shopify or Medusa
BigCommerce’s parent is now Commerce.com, and the plan you pay for climbs with your sales. If you are weighing your options, we move your store to Shopify or Medusa with products, customers and order history intact, every URL redirected, and a storefront built around your brand.
Signs it is time to leave BigCommerce
BigCommerce is a capable hosted platform. These are the moments merchants start looking at what else is out there.
Your plan grows with your sales
BigCommerce plans are tied to your sales over the last twelve months and upgrade automatically, so a good year can also mean a bigger platform bill.
The platform is changing direction
The parent company renamed itself Commerce.com in 2025 and now pitches an open, composable suite. A good moment to decide where your store should live next.
The app you need is not on the list
BigCommerce lists over 1,200 apps. Shopify lists many times more, so the subscription, loyalty or reviews tool your team wants is easier to find there.
Custom logic means working around the theme
Configurators, bundles or wholesale rules end up as scripts and app workarounds on Stencil, BigCommerce’s own theme framework.
Content and products live apart
Landing pages, guides and the blog sit in a separate builder or a separate site, so campaigns take longer than they should.
What happens to your BigCommerce apps
Pick what your store runs today. Each app becomes a feature of the new platform, a single app, or turns out not to be needed.
- Payment gatewaysShopify Payments or StripeCard payments, wallets and local methods run through the platform’s checkout. Your Stripe or PayPal account can stay if you move to Medusa.
- Variant and modifier optionsVariants and optionsSizes, colours and custom fields become product variants and options, mapped by script with their SKUs, prices and stock.
- B2B EditionB2B pricingShopify’s B2B catalogues, or price lists and customer groups in Medusa. Company accounts and quotes are scoped in the audit.
- Multi-storefrontMarkets and regionsShopify Markets or Medusa regions handle countries, currencies and languages, each with its own URLs and hreflang.
- Page Builder / MakeswiftContent blocks in SanityLanding pages, guides and the blog move to Sanity, where editors build pages from on-brand blocks next to your products.
- Product reviewsReviews imported to the new storeReviews and star ratings move into a reviews app on Shopify or into Medusa, so product pages keep their social proof.
- Shipping rules and carrier appsShipping rules in the platformZones, rates and free-shipping thresholds are set up natively, with a carrier service if you need live rates.
- Product feedsFeeds from the new catalogueGoogle Shopping and marketplace feeds are rebuilt from the new catalogue, through the platform’s own channels or the feed tool you already use.
- 301 redirectsRedirects in the new storeEvery product, category, brand and page URL is mapped to its new address with a permanent redirect.
What changes when you leave BigCommerce
Shopify suits stores that want the widest choice of apps and less to run. Medusa suits custom pricing, complex logic or owning the code. Both can sit behind a Sanity-powered storefront; we recommend one after the audit.

How we move a BigCommerce store
Your store keeps selling until the new one is ready. On launch day we sync the last orders and switch the domain.
Audit
Audit
We list every product type, app, payment and shipping rule, crawl every URL and export your rankings, so nothing is lost by accident.
Platform and plan

Shopify or Medusa, with a written scope and a launch date. B2B pricing, multi-storefront setups and integrations are planned up front.
Data migration
Data migration
Products, options, categories, brands, customers, orders and reviews move by script through the BigCommerce API. We run it on a copy and check the numbers match.
Storefront

Your design rebuilt as a theme or a headless storefront, with editorial pages in Sanity and checkout on the new platform.
Redirects and launch

Every product, category, brand and page URL gets a permanent redirect. We sync orders placed during the build, then switch the domain.

Questions about leaving BigCommerce
No. In July 2025 the parent company renamed itself Commerce.com, and BigCommerce carries on as its ecommerce platform. There is no deadline forcing a move. The question is whether the platform still fits where your store is heading.
Not if the move is planned. Shopify uses fixed /products/ and /collections/ paths, so every old product, category and brand URL gets a permanent redirect, and titles, descriptions and structured data are carried over. On Medusa we can usually keep your URLs exactly as they are.
Customer accounts, addresses and order history move across. Passwords cannot be exported from BigCommerce, and Shopify cannot import them anyway, so customers either get an invite to set a new one or sign in with a one-time email code.
Yes. BigCommerce exports orders with their line items and totals, and we move them by script so your team and your customers can still see them. Orders placed while we build are synced again on launch day.
Shopify if you want the platform to handle hosting, checkout and updates, with the largest app store behind it. Medusa if you need custom pricing, unusual product logic or want to own the code. The audit gives you a plain recommendation.
No. The BigCommerce store keeps selling until launch day, when we sync the latest orders and switch the domain.
It depends on the number of products, apps and integrations. After the audit you get a fixed scope and timeline.
